What is a
Mammogram?

A mammogram is a low-dose, specialised X-ray scan of the breast used to detect abnormalities and signs of breast cancer early, often before symptoms appear. It involves gently compressing the breast tissue between two plates to get clear black-and-white images, which are then analysed by a radiologist.

Mammography is a vital tool in early breast cancer detection, significantly improving treatment success. The procedure is quick, safe, and takes about 20 minutes. Patients are advised to schedule mammograms when their breasts are least tender and to avoid deodorants or lotions on the day of the test for accurate imaging.

How you prepare

Mammogram

To prepare for your mammogram:

Schedule the test for a time when your breasts are least likely to be tender. If you menstruate, that’s usually during the week after your menstrual period.
Bring your prior mammogram images. If you’re going to a new facility for your mammogram, request to have any prior mammograms placed on a CD. Bring the CD with you to your appointment so that the radiologist can compare past mammograms with your new images.
Don’t use deodorant before your mammogram. Avoid using deodorants, antiperspirants, powders, lotions, creams or perfumes under your arms or on your breasts. Metallic particles in powders and deodorants could be visible on your mammogram and confuse.

What Happens During a Mammogram?

Many women feel nervous about the procedure, but a mammogram is quick and straightforward.

Here’s what you can expect:

Preparation: You’ll be asked to undress from the waist up.
Positioning: A female radiographer will carefully position your breast on the mammogram machine.
Compression: The breast is gently but firmly pressed between two plates to flatten the tissue. This helps capture a clear image. Each compression lasts about 10 seconds.
Imaging: Usually, two X-ray images are taken of each breast.
Duration: The entire appointment takes around 20 minutes.

When Should You Have a Mammogram?

According to Cancer Council Australia and BreastScreen Australia:

Women aged 50–74 should have a mammogram every 2 years.
Women aged 40–49 or over 74 can also access free screening, but they won’t receive invitation letters.
Women with a family history of breast cancer or other risk factors may need to start earlier, as recommended by their doctor.

Are There Any Risks Involved?

All measures are taken to limit the radiation dose for mammograms. All routine images are checked with the radiologist prior to any subsequent imaging being performed.

Please keep in mind that your doctor believes that the benefit of having this examination performed outweighs the minimal risk to your health that is caused by exposing your body to this low dose of radiation.

What happens after a Mammogram?

Mammography produces mammograms — black-and-white images of your breast tissue. Mammograms are digital images that appear on a computer screen. A doctor who specialises in interpreting imaging tests (radiologist) examines the images.

The radiologist looks for evidence of cancer and other conditions that may require further testing, follow-up or treatment. The results are compiled in a report and provided to your health care provider. Ask your provider when and how the results will be shared with you.
